Sir Keir Starmer must have hoped that his two hour-plus explanation to the Commons on Monday as to why he appointed Peter Mandelson to be ambassador to Washington would draw a line under the affair. Instead, it has left more questions unanswered and further undermined his self-styled reputation for moral probity.
